Migne - Patrologia Latina Vols I/II
(1844)

-----------------------------

1844 : MIGNE : Paris, by Jacques-Paul Migne, Patrologia Latina, vols I and II. This was printed on cheap paper, meaning the paper copies are pretty fragile now. Worse still, the font used is ancient and hard to read, and each page has two columns, which are numbered instead of numbering the pages. There are some 221 volumes, and not much in the way of indexes. Copies are available on open shelves at the British Library in the Humanities reading room 1, Cambridge University Library, and the Bodleian Library in Oxford, to my certain knowledge.

In 1981 Brepols of Turnhout in Belgium brought it back into print, and their web page states they intend to keep it that way, with a mixture of reprints and original copies. They will do mail order, using VISA, and quoted me a price (in Euros!) of about £40 per volume. See their website for more details, although I found I had to email them for contact details..

Migne's text is a somewhat careless collection of everything he could lay hands on. As such, it is a far more complete collection of the fathers than anything subsequent. For the Tertullian volumes, it is the final incarnation of the Rigaltius edition, with amendments by the future Cardinal Pitra.  For the difficult birth of the PL, see Soltner, L, REAug 21 (1975), pp.317-343 (CTC 1997, §11).

Chadwyck-Healey have digitised all this onto 5 CD-ROM's, making it far easier to use, albeit at a price - I was quoted £27,000! Mind you I have heard in the grapevine a price of $2,000... Read about this product on their Patrologia Latina home page.  It isn't very difficult to find second-hand copies of the originals, however.

There's a copy of the CDROM available from the terminals in the Bodleian Library in Oxford, and at the Cambridge University library.
