Book 1 of the Chronicle doesn't exist in English. Indeed the original Greek doesn't exist either! All we have
is an ancient Armenian translation. This is a bit beyond everyone, and no critical text of it exists anyway.
But we do have a modern Latin translation, and also a German translation.
It would be career suicide for a scholar to try to publish an English translation unless it was done from the
Armenian text. But why can't a bunch of amateurs, post-grads and independent scholars make a rough translation,
mainly for fun and just to appear online? It would be useful as a way to make the text more accessible.
It's a very interesting text. It contains long extracts from otherwise lost historians like Alexander Polyhistor,
Manetho, Berossus, Castor of Rhodes, and Porphyry. Indeed extracts from it have often been translated, although
always from the Latin or German!
So let's do it. The Latin and German are here in parallel columns, broken down into small bits.
All you have to do is click 'edit' and type in your English translation. There are no passwords, no login accounts.
If you want, stick your initials on the end; or not, if you'd rather be anonymous. Do a sentence or two; or more, or less.
It doesn't matter. And we'll see how it goes.
